The innovative Economy of Nature approach seeks to restore the ecological health of natural areas and foster alternative economic activities based on wildlife spotting tourism that promote an economic and social recovery in rural areas.
With an economic history based on sheep farming, in recent decades many estancias in the region have seen their activity in declination due to the eruption of volcanoes and the accumulation of ash, overgrazing and soil erosion, and the difficulty of finding staff trained and willing to work in isolated rural environments. Other sources of work, such as mining and fruit-farming in northern Patagonia, are better paid and have impacted on the traditional productive matrix of the region. This scenario has given rise to new ways of thinking about production. With the development of the portals of Patagonia Park known as “La Ascensión” and “Cañadón Pinturas”, part of the local population benefits from the production of nature through the provision of services related to ecotourism, conservation and wildlife management and the development of commercial ventures with a brand of origin.
